Queen size mattress info

If you're looking for the best queen size mattress you're with the majority of bed shoppers. It's the most popular mattress size of the lot, because it's just right for most people's needs: a queen size mattress is big enough for most couples, but it won't take up all the available space in your bedroom, which a king size mattress can.

Because queen sizes are so popular you're unlikely to ever find a mattress that isn't available in queen size. This of course means, though, that there are a lot of options to choose from, even when you've trimmed things down to our picks of the best mattresses on the market. However to save you a lot of searching we've done the difficult bit for you: we've selected a more manageable group of the very best queen size mattresses on sale now. All of these these queen size mattresses excel in comfort and support, and each will appeal to a particular subset of sleepers, so you can quickly find the one that's right for you.

Here at TechRadar we're constantly monitoring the mattress market. We're reviewing and researching mattresses on a daily basis, so we know what factors matter when it comes to matching you up with the perfect mattress for your sleep style and budget. We'll even help you find the lowest price; mattress sales are a regular thing, and we've included shopping info with each product entry so you know what a good deal looks like. Best queen size mattress overall

The best queen size mattress 2024: top beds in a just-right size (7)

1. Saatva Classic Mattress

The best queen size mattress overall

Specifications

Type: Hybrid innerspring

Firmness (1-10): 3, 5.5 or 8

Height: 11.5 or 14.5"

Trial: 365 nights

Warranty: Lifetime

Price bracket: Premium

Buy it if

You want to invest in quality: With exceptional performance and high build quality, the Saatva Classic will provide comfortable sleep until it's time to replace your mattress.

✅ You want comfort tailored to you: A variety of height and softness options allows you to pick a finish to suit your sleep style.

You experience back pain: The Saatva Classic features spinal technology that's been approved by the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations.

Don't buy it if

❌ You want a budget bed: The Saatva Classic is a premium mattress. We do think the price is reflected in the performance, but if it's out of your budget, the Helix (#2) and Nectar (#3) offer affordable quality.

❌ You share a bed: While our testers were pleased with the motion isolation, it's not as good as you'll find on a model with higher proportions of memory foam – for example, the Helix Midnight (#2).

You like to sink into your mattress: With minimal foam, the Saatva doesn't have much 'hug'. If you like to sink into your sleep surface, check out the Nectar Memory Foam (#3).

The bottom line

🔎 The Saatva Classic is an exceptional mattress offering strong all-round performance and a luxury feel, plus customization options to suit your sleep style. The price tag is high, but it's worth it. ★★★★½

We rate the Saatva Classic as the best hybrid mattress on the market. This luxury innerspring hybrid is Saatva's most popular model and with three firmness options to choose from as well as two heights, it's one you can buy in a configuration that'll suit your exact requirements.

Design and material
A hybrid mattress, the Saatva Classic is constructed using both foam and innersprings. The base is formed of durable coils, with high-density foam rails around the edge to bolster the perimeter. This is topped with a layer of Lumbar Zone pocketed coils, which cradle the body and contour to your shape. Next, a high-density memory foam layer in just the central third, with added 'spinal wire', delivers targeted support for the lumba . Finally, a three-inch Euro pillow top with lumbar zone quilting gives plush support.

Firmness and comfort
Thanks to the combination of springs and a small amount of foam, the Saatva Classic has a buoyant sleep surface. You sit on top of the mattress, rather than sink in. But don't think it will feel like sleeping on a board – the plush pillow top adds luxurious softness.

Lumbar support is a particular highlight of the Saatva Classic and customers suffering with back ache regularly praise the mattress for helping to ease pain. The Lumbar Zone technology is approved by the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations, and we rate this one of the best mattresses for back pain on the market.

Saatva offers the Classic in a range of firmness levels, so you can customize the mattress to suit your sleep style. The most popular is Luxury Firm (rated 5.5 out of 10 on firmness), which suits most sleep styles and body types. Plush Soft (3) works best for side sleepers and those with a lighter build, while Firm (8) is excellent for heavier bodies and stomach or back sleepers.

Performance
The Saatva Classic scored well in all our testing areas. We found it particularly good at temperature regulation, keeping sleepers cool throughout the night. The edge support is also fantastic, which is good news if you share with a partner (or like to starfish). Increased edge support means you can stretch all the way to the perimeter, without losing support.

The only (small) complaint with the Saatva Classic is motion control. Some reviewers have found the softer surface can move with your sleeping partner. If motion isolation is important to you, consider a Firm surface, or try the Helix (#2).

Value for money
The Saatva Classic is almost never sold at full price, but even with the regular Saatva mattress sale, it sits in the premium price bracket. With free white glove delivery, a one-year trial period and a lifetime warranty, there’s not much to dislike about this mattress apart from the $99 charge to refund or exchange it.

Best queen size mattress for side sleepers

The best queen size mattress 2024: top beds in a just-right size (8)

2. Helix Midnight Mattress

The best queen size mattress for side sleepers

Specifications

Type: Hybrid

Firmness (1-10): 5.5

Height: 11.5"

Trial: 100 nights

Warranty: 10 years

Price bracket: Mid-range

Buy it if

You sleep on your side: The Helix Midnight is our best mattress for side sleepers, as the softer surface helps the body stay aligned.

✅ You suffer from achy joints: The Helix Midnight provides outstanding pressure relief, cushioning the body so you wake up refreshed, not sore.

Your partner tosses and turns: The combination of wrapped coils and memory foam stops motion from traveling across the mattress.

Don't buy it if

❌ You sleep on your front: The sink-in surface doesn't provide much support for stomach sleepers. The Avocado Green (#5) is would be a much better option.

❌ You like a bit of bounce: The Helix Midnight grabs, rather than pushes back. If you prefer a more responsive feel, try the Saatva Classic (#1).

You have a heavier build: If you weigh over 250lbs, you might prefer a firmer mattress with greater support – the Helix range includes options for all firmness preferences and body types.

The bottom line

🔎 The softer memory foam surface of the Helix Midnight mattress hugs the body, offering gentle joint support for side sleepers. It also absorbs motion brilliantly, making this mattress a favorite for couples. ★★★★½

The slightly softer feel of the Helix Midnight mattress makes it our top pick of the best mattresses for side sleepers. Sleeping softer than others, it's ideal for side sleepers who need extra cushioning at pressure points on their shoulders and hips.

Design and materials
The Helix Midnight mattress is a 12-inch hybrid with four support layers. At the base is a layer of durable DuraDense foam, followed by a layer of wrapped coils that reduce motion transfer and flex beneath the sleeper's body. Next, two layers of foam provide pressure relief and comfort. It's finished with a soft BreatheKnit cover that helps air circulate, but you can upgrade to a GlacioTex cover if you tend to sleep hot.

Firmness and comfort
Helix ranks the Midnight as a medium-firm mattress, and although our testers found it softer than expected at first, after some time, we agreed with the assessment (we gave it a 5-6/10). The foam layers contour to the body, offering pressure relief that's particularly notable for those who sleep on their side. The plush surface does provide a foam 'hug', but the medium-firm feel will appeal to couples who like different sleep surfaces.

Stomach sleepers and those with a heavier build are likely to find the mattress too soft. If you do want something firmer, but you like what this brand has to offer, we have good news: the Helix range has models for all sleep style/firmness preferences. Check out the Helix Twilight, which is the same as the Midnight, but with a firmer comfort layer.

Performance
The superior motion isolation on the Helix Midnight makes this a great choice for those sharing a bed with a restless sleeper. The temperature regulation is also good, even with the basic BreatheKnit cover. And if you sleep particularly hot, there’s the option to add a specialized GlacioTex Cooling Cover at checkout for an extra fee. The edge support is average, but this is only really notable for how well the Helix Midnight performed in our other testing areas.

Value for money
The Helix Midnight sits squarely in the mid-range price bracket. However, an evergreen sale means there's always at least 20% off, and if you can hang on until a major sale event, you might save even more.

Best queen size memory foam mattress

3. Nectar Memory Foam Mattress

The best queen size memory foam mattress

Specifications

Type: All-foam

Firmness (1-10): 6.5

Height: 12"

Trial: 365 nights

Warranty: Lifetime

Price bracket: Lower mid-range

Buy it if

You want the memory foam 'hug': The all-foam design of the Nectar Memory Foam cradles your joints as you sleep.

You share with a restless partner: A layer of cradling foam absorbs movements and keeps motion transfer to a minimum.

✅ You want high performance at a lower price: Evergreen sales make the Nectar Memory Foam a bargain for the quality, and the trial and warranty are very generous for a bed in this price bracket.

Don't buy it if

❌ You get hot in the night: While the Nectar Memory Foam offers decent temperature regulation, it can get warm on a hot night. The Cocoon Chill (#4) has a similar design, but adds a cooling cover.

❌ You want a responsive surface: The cradling effect of memory foam can feel confining. A hybrid like the Saatva Classic (#1) has a bouncier, more responsive surface.

You need plenty of support: Front sleepers and those with heavier builds might find the Nectar has too much sink, not enough support.

The bottom line

🔎 The Nectar Memory Foam has the classic hug of memory foam at an excellent price. It's a particularly strong option for side sleepers, as the gel-infused memory foam cradles the pressure points. ★★★★

We think the Nectar mattress is the best memory foam mattress around, with it being suitable for a wide range of sleepers. And you can happily ignore the MSRP – Nectar's mattress is always on sale. This is a great choice if you’re on a budget but still want to invest in quality.

Design and materials
The Nectar Memory Foam is a 12-inch, all-foam mattress. It's topped with a breathable cooling cover that sits on two inches of plush therapeutic gel-infused memory foam. Beneath this is a three-inch dynamic response foam layer, which offers support and rebound, followed by a seven-inch stability base layer. Finally, a shift-resistant lower cover keeps your mattress in place.

Firmness and comfort
Like most memory foam mattresses, the Nectar gives you a body ‘hug’ where it contours to your body to support pressure points. This makes it a particularly good choice for side sleepers and those who suffer with joint pain. But while your body will feel cradled, it doesn't have the 'quicksand' feel of some memory foams.

At a 6.5/10 on the firmness scale, this mattress provides plenty of support and a sleep surface that will appeal to most. However, if you’re a stomach sleeper or of a heavier build, the Nectar can feel a little too soft, without the support to keep your spine properly aligned.

Performance
The Nectar really excels when it comes to motion isolation, with the memory foam absorbing movement extremely well. It’s also got surprisingly good edge support for an all-foam mattress. If you like to spread out across the queen-size surface, you should feel supported right to the edge.

With a three-inch layer of gel memory foam at the top of the mattress, the Nectar doesn’t absorb heat as much as some all-foam options, but we still wouldn’t recommend it if you are a very hot sleeper. Check out the Cocoon by Sealy Chill – this has a similar design but with the addition of a phase-change cover (see our Nectar vs Cocoon mattress comparison to see exactly how they match up).

Value for money
Pay no attention to the MSRP of the Nectar Memory Foam – evergreen sales means it's always at a discount. These discounts put the Nectar at the lower end of the mid-range price bracket. An excellent price for the quality, especially when you add in a 365-night trial and a lifetime warranty.

4. Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress

The best queen size cooling mattress on a budget

Specifications

Type: All-foam

Firmness (1-10): 6

Height: 10"

Trial: 100 nights

Warranty: 10 years

Price bracket: Lower mid-range

Buy it if

You sleep hot: The phase-change material top cover absorbs and dissipates heat, while breathable foams help air circulate.

You sleep on your front or back: A firmer surface offers more support for the hips and lower back, making it a good choice for front or back sleepers.

✅ You want cooling on a budget: The Cocoon Chill is an affordable alternative to high-end cooling mattresses with lofty price points. If you have a flexible budget, consider upgrading with the Extra-Chill technology.

Don't buy it if

❌ You want to be hugged by the foam: With a firmer sleeping surface (we rate it 8/10), you sleep on top of the Cocoon Chill. For more sink, we recommend the Helix Midnight (#2) or Nectar Memory Foam (#3).

❌ You sleep at the edges: Edge supporting is a little lacking, so if you want to be able to press up off the edges of your bed, you might be better with a different model.

You have a big overheating problem: The Cocoon Chill has excellent cooling properties for the price, but if you often wake up hot and uncomfortable, you'll need to shell out a bit more for a more specialist option.

The bottom line

🔎 The Cocoon by Sealy Chill is a memory foam mattress with superior cooling technology and a firmer surface that appeals to front and back sleepers. It might not perform as well as as pricier cooling options, but it's still a good choice for budget-conscious sleepers. ★★★★

Hot sleepers on a budget should check out the Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress. This all-foam model is similar to the Nectar (#3) but with the addition of a phase-change cover to aid with temperature regulation. While it can’t compete with the best cooling mattresses, which cost a fair bit more, for an all-foam mattress it does an impressive job of keeping sleepers cool.

Design and materials
The Cocoon by Sealy Chill is an all-foam mattress (although there is a hybrid upgrade available). Six inches of durable memory foam provide a supportive base, followed by a Responsive Comfort Layer that minimizes motion transfer. A Perfect Fit Memory Foam layer relieves the pressure points and encourages airflow, but the star of the design is the cooling cover. Made with phase-change fibers, it helps dissipate trapped heat for a pleasant night.

Firmness and Comfort
While Sealy Chill rates the Cocoon as a 6/10 on the firmness scale, our testing panel found it firmer than that – around an 8/10. This might be too firm for some lighter bodies, but it should be supportive and comfortable for front and back sleepers. With cushioning memory foam cradling the pressure points, the Cocoon Chill will feel comfortable for most side sleepers. However, if you like to sink into the mattress, the firmer surface might be an issue.

Performance
The standout feature of the Cocoon by Sealy Chill is the impressive temperature regulation. Even on warm nights, our testers stayed comfortably cool. This is thanks to a combination of a phase-change material cover and breathable memory foam, allowing hot air to circulate and dissipate.

As well as quality temperature regulation, the Cocoon Chill performed well in our motion isolation testing. However, weaker edge support might be an issue if you share with a partner or you like to stretch out.

Value for money
Cooling mattresses typically come with a high price tag due to the specialized materials and build. The Cocoon by Sealy Chill bucks that trend, offering exceptional temperature regulation in the lower mid-range price bracket. Plus, an evergreen discount and freebie offer makes this mattress excellent value for money.

Best queen size organic mattress

The best queen size mattress 2024: top beds in a just-right size (11)

5. Avocado Green Mattress

The best queen size organic mattress

Specifications

Type: Latex hybrid

Firmness (1-10): 7

Height: 11"

Trial: 365 nights

Warranty: 25 years

Price bracket: Premium

Buy it if

You want an organic mattress: Avocado uses certified organic latex, cotton, and wool, and prioritizes eco-friendly processes throughout the build.

You have a heavier build: The Avocado Green mattress is rated to hold up to 700lbs without sacrificing support.

✅ You sleep on your back or stomach: The ergonomic coils promote healthy spine alignment, while the firmer feel provide ample support.

Don't buy it if

❌ You sleep on your side: The firmer surface of the Avocado Green mattress lacks the contouring side sleepers often need. Consider the pillow top upgrade, or the Helix Midnight (#2).

❌ You have a tight budget: Organic mattresses are typically pricey and the Avocado is no exception. There are cheaper natural options in our organic mattress guide.

You have a slight build: A firmer surface might not offer the sink or contouring a lighter body needs. The pillow top or box-top upgrade will help add cushioning to the pressure points.

The bottom line

🔎 An organic hybrid mattress, the Avocado Green Mattress is an excellent choice for back sleepers who want an eco-friendly bed. The pocketed coils offers ergonomic support, but side sleepers might prefer something more cushioned and contouring. ★★★★

If you're looking for an eco-friendly mattress the Avocado Green is a great choice. One of our recommended best organic mattresses, the Avocado Green is particularly well suited to back sleepers and heavier weight sleepers, thanks to a firmly supportive surface.

Materials and design
Made from a combination of Dunlop latex, wool, cotton and pocketed coils, the mattress is GOTS, GOLS and Greenguard Gold certified. There are three layers to the standard mattress: a cotton and wool cover, a layer of Dunlop latex foam, and a base layer of pocketed coils. These coils are divided into five ‘strategic zones’, which are designed to support the shoulders, hips, and lower back in different ways. The mattress is finished with needle-tufted rosettes, which are made by hand for increased durability. There's also a vegan version of the mattress, which contains no wool (and is approved by PETA).

Firmness and comfort
Avocado rates the mattress 7/10 on the firmness scale and our testers agreed. The innerspring layer provides ergonomic support, keeping your back aligned, relieving pressure, and promoting even weight distribution. The firmer feel is best for back sleepers, while front sleepers should feel comfortable. The mattress can support combined weight up to 700lbs without any sinkage or loss of support.

Due to the firmer surface, side sleepers and lighter sleepers might want to invest in the pillow top upgrade. This is an expensive addition ($300 for a queen), but it does provider the contouring a side sleeper needs. For an even softer upgrade, you can add a plush box top for $1,100.

Performance
The Avocado Green mattress performed strongly in all our testing areas. We were particularly impressed with the edge support – Avocado uses a reinforced steel perimeter to ensure the mattress doesn't dip at the perimeter. Motion isolation is also excellent, thanks to the individually pocketed coils that keep movement contained. We were impressed with the temperature regulation, as the mattress was cool-to-touch and stayed comfortable on warm nights.

Value for money
Like most latex hybrids, the Avocado Green mattress sits in the premium price bracket. Semi-regular 10% off Avocado mattress deals, make this mattress a little more affordable, but don't expect much more than that. However, the durability, performance, and hand-crafted finish do help justify the price tag. For an organic mattress at a cheaper price, try the Awara Natural Hybrid Mattress.

How to choose the best queen size mattress

A mattress is a big investment and you’ll want to make sure that you choose the right one for your sleeping requirements. Here are the things you should consider when choosing your new mattress:

  • Materials – Memory foam in particular can be quite a divisive material. Some people love the ‘hug’ it gives, while others feel smothered by it, and might get on better with a hybrid, made with a combination of springs and foam, or a latex mattress that has more bounce than memory foam (but which will cost a lot more). Choose your materials depending on whether you want to sink into a mattress or sleep on top of it.
  • Firmness – Side sleepers and those of a lighter build generally prefer medium to soft mattresses, while back and stomach sleepers along with those of a heavier build prefer firm. However, this does come down to personal preference.
  • Price – A higher price tag doesn’t always mean a better mattress. Prioritize the features that you need over the price of the mattress.
  • Temperature – How hot do you get at night? If you’re prone to overheating, make sure you choose a mattress with features that help keep it cool; hybrids tend to be better in that regard as their spring layers allow air to circulate within the mattress.
  • Trial periods – One of the great things about modern mattresses is that most come with a trial period so you can try them at home. Make sure the trial period is long enough for you to give the mattress a good test run and check the terms and conditions.

Is it worth getting a queen size mattress?

Queen mattresses are extremely popular for good reason. Big enough for a couple to sleep on comfortably, they’re also ideal for single sleepers who like to stretch out sideways.

If you have a smaller bedroom a queen mattress will also give you extra space around the bed. A queen mattress typically measures 60" x 80", so you’ll get an extra 18 inches of walking space around the bed compared to a king size mattress. And queen sizes are easier to move around, flip or rotate. Finally, queen mattresses are also considerably cheaper than a king size, meaning you can afford to get a better quality mattress for your budget.
