Red Onion Prices Skyrocket: Import Lag Investigation (2025)

Onion Import Delays Spark Price Surge Concerns

The agricultural sector is facing a pressing issue: a lag in red onion imports is causing a stir in the market. Are importers deliberately holding back, or is there a legitimate reason for the delay?

The Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) is demanding answers from importers as to why red onion shipments are lagging compared to yellow onions. This discrepancy has officials worried, especially with the holiday season approaching, a time when demand skyrockets.

Red onion prices have soared past P300 per kilo, leaving consumers frustrated. Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. has taken a firm stance, stating, "We will not tolerate inaction. If importers are sitting on permits, we will reallocate them to ensure a well-supplied market." The Secretary emphasized the President's directive to maintain stable supply and avoid past shortages that led to inflated food prices.

The DA-BPI's data reveals a stark contrast. While 443 permits for yellow onions have been utilized since August, bringing in over 21,000 metric tons, only 192 permits for red onions have been used, importing just under 13,000 metric tons. This lag has officials questioning the importers' strategies.

But here's where it gets controversial—the DA-BPI's solution is to cancel unused permits and redistribute them. This move aims to expedite imports and stabilize prices, but is it fair to revoke permits without fully understanding the importers' challenges?

The DA-BPI's Director, Gerald Glenn Panganiban, has ordered increased market surveillance, citing that farm-gate and wholesale prices don't justify the retail spikes. The Bureau is collaborating with enforcement agencies to ensure a fair and stable market.

As the DA-BPI takes action, the question remains—are the importers at fault, or is there more to this onion shortage than meets the eye?
