OpenAI’s leadership has sounded the alarm with a “code red” moment as Gemini surges to 200 million users in just three months.
Beyond the online chatter surrounding Gemini, Google is rapidly narrowing the gap with ChatGPT in user numbers. OpenAI reports that ChatGPT now boasts over 800 million weekly users, while Business Insider notes Gemini’s growth—from 450 million monthly active users in July to 650 million in October.
Financial stakes are high and the debate is heated.
Not everyone buys into OpenAI’s coded warning. Reuters columnist Robert Cyran argued on Tuesday that the “code red” claim may reflect OpenAI spreading itself too thin, pursuing ambitious tech goals that still need substantial development and funding. The same day that the memo circulated, OpenAI announced an ownership stake in Thrive Capital’s venture and a collaboration with Accenture. Cyran quipped that the company has more appetite for capital than focus, suggesting the attention deficit is outsized by the need for cash.
OpenAI also faces a structural disadvantage: unlike Google, which funds its AI initiatives through revenue from search ads, OpenAI is not profitable and must rely on ongoing fundraising. Reports suggest the company, valued around $500 billion, has commitments exceeding $1 trillion with cloud providers and chipmakers essential to training and running its AI models.
Yet the pace of change in tech is nonstop. There are reports that Altman’s memo hints at a forthcoming simulated reasoning model, expected to be released next week, which could outperform Gemini 3 in internal tests. In AI development, the cycle of advancement and counter-advancement is likely to continue as long as investment keeps flowing. It’s a high-stakes dance with big prizes—and bigger questions about where the real value lies and who will profit most.
